National Volunteer Appreciation Week: JFS Thanks Volunteers!

By Kim Hutnik

The week of April 17 – 22 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week. This week, and every day, we thank and appreciate all the wonderful JFS volunteers who are making a difference in the lives of so many in the Harrisburg community.

Our volunteers assist with our Kosher Meals on Wheels program, the Libby Urie Food Pantry, and the Afghan Refugee Resettlement program.  None of our work would be successful without the support of our dedicated volunteers!

“When I saw the notice looking for volunteers to help with the Afghan refugee resettlement effort, I was interested because it seemed like the right thing to do,” says Mark Glick, a JFS volunteer.  “These refugees had suffered through many terrible things, and as the child of refugees, I wanted to help.”

Mark says that volunteering has been personally fulfilling. “I really had no expectations, as this was the first time I had done something like this,” he says.  “I just wanted to help in some way. What I found was an experience more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. The people are kind, and so appreciative of everything. Their stories are so moving. Getting to know them, and offer some amount of help and friendship, has allowed me to be more in touch with my own humanity, and has been an incredible experience.”

Volunteers - thank you for everything you do! For more info on volunteering with Jewish Family Service, contact Kim Hutnik at 717-233-3014 or khutnik@jfsofhbg.org.
