Federation Hosts First Official Event on Grass Campus

By Adam Grobman

On Wednesday, May 18, the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg hosted the first official community event at the Alexander Grass Campus for Jewish Life, in celebration of Lag Ba’omer.

More than fifty people joined together on the lawn of the Grass Campus to celebrate the holiday, where lawn signs featuring the campus’ multi-colored flame logo mimicked the bonfires that traditionally illuminate the festive evening.

Highlights of the program included an obstacle course, mini golf, and field games for all ages.

“It is incredible to be on the new campus,” said Terri Travers, JCC Program Director. “The energy was felt by all in attendance – it was an amazing preview of all the great activities and programs to come at our community’s new home.”

The Grass Campus, slated to fully open in 2023, will host the Federation/JCC, Jewish Family Service, The Silver Academy, and other community organizations and initiatives and will serve as a home base for Jewish life in Harrisburg.

“Two neighbors texted me to say how excited they were to see life on the campus,” said Abby Smith, Federation Board Chair. “It’s the first big event with many more to come – multiple generations having fun on the Grass Campus was the perfect way to celebrate Lag Ba’Omer, with the Jewish spirit on full display with fun and games led by our talented staff.”

Among the plans for the campus are a dedicated Senior Center, Sports Center with therapy pool and gymatorium, underground parking, and much, much more.

Upcoming events at the Grass Campus include Jewish Family Service’s 50 Years of Caring with Chef Michael Solomonov on Thursday, June 9 (tickets available at jfsofhbg.org/kmow50), and a media event dedicating the campus (with plans to livestream for the community) on June 23. A celebration and grand opening for the community will be held at a later date.
